Riverhurst took its name from two post offices that stood nearby, Riverside and Boldenhurst. The name is a blend of the two. The community incorporated as a village on June 22, 1916.
It sits in the southwest Coteau Hills area, north of the Vermillion Hills, in the Rural Municipality of Maple Bush No. 224, and it has remained primarily a farming community.
Today Riverhurst is close to the east bank of Lake Diefenbaker on Highway 42. It is home to the Riverhurst Ferry, a cable ferry that carries Highway 42 traffic across the lake to Lucky Lake on the west bank. The village lies 8 km south of the Elbow crater.
Royal Canadian Mounted Police Constable Thomas Brian King, who was shot to death in Saskatoon, once lived in Riverhurst.
